Self Worth vs. Self Esteem

Posted on Aug 1, 2016 | by Brenda Stanton

“When you allow yourself to let-go, success can flow!”

Do you ever wonder what the difference is between your self-esteem and your self-worth?

Meditating with Rudraksha beads

The two are very closely aligned – like brother and sister are in the bloodline.

Yet, there is also a major distinction to be made between the two – and I’ve discovered this through loads of contemplation and study – and direct experience. So, as a disclaimer, whatever I describe below is based on my own experience and beliefs – and certainly isn’t the only way in which to view the distinction.

Your self-esteem is how you feel about yourself based on your actions. It’s what you have control over. It’s how you feel about yourself from the inside/out. Overall, are you proud of yourself for who you are, what you stand for and what actions you take and don’t take based on the values that you choose to orient your life around?

Your self-worth, has a much more spiritual bend to it (again, my opinion) because it’s directly related to your identity, your sense of self, your overall feeling of importance and value in this world. Overall, do you feel that you deserve to be here on the earth plane and have the right to take up space – and to be happy within that space you call your life?

The major difference is: Self-esteem is geared towards doing vs. Self-worth is more about being. Both have a tremendous amount of value – and serve very different purposes in your life. They both also work beautifully together when married in their natural energies.

The Truth is: most of the teachings ‘out there’ focus on boosting your self-esteem.

Fear of Being Seen

“Owning our story can be hard but not nearly as difficult as spending our lives running from it. Embracing our vulnerabilities is risky but not nearly as dangerous as giving up on love and belonging and joy—the experiences that make us the most vulnerable. Only when you are brave enough to explore the darkness will you discover the infinite power of our light.” ~Brené Brown

Amy Cuddy’s Ted Talk shows you how to literally take up space in the world.

I highly recommend practicing some of the postures (as she suggests in private) and accessing how you feel inside yourself.

Then, access how you’d feel outside in the world.

Protect Your Energy

“Never allow what another does steal your joy. You have power to react any way you choose. Be conscious of protecting your positive energy.”

When you are on the conscious path and taking responsibility for how you yearn to, and deserve to, live your life – you will not only battle with your own negative thoughts and inner critic, but you’ll also have to deal with the negative thoughts and inner critics of others.

If you’ve been on the self-development path for quite some time, no doubt you’ve read about, implemented and succeeded at the power of positive thinking. It’s true, what you think about you bring about.

Yet, as with everything, there are always deeper levels to go to with the learning.

As you continue to Claim Your Worth!®, you may notice that it feels like it will get harder before it gets easier. And much of this has to do with your dealings of others who aren’t on the same conscious path as you.

This is in no way to say anyone is “better” or “more evolved” than anyone else. Rather, it simply is the Truth that we all have different roles to play here on planet earth – and everyone is reading their own life script.

You Have Authority

““If you ask me what I came to do in this world, I, an artist, will answer you: I am here to live out loud.” ~Émile Zola”

As I mentioned in last week’s article: Different Stages of Not Good Enough, when you go to different levels in your own growth and evolution, new challenges with “not enough” will emerge.

I heard someone say the other day “New Level, New Devil.” Very true!

Yet, our “not enoughness” at different levels need not be viewed as a “bad”, but just an opportunity to get closer to your untapped potential and your life’s calling/purpose.

And…like any worthwhile endeavor, you get to SEE and realize your blocks. Otherwise, they stay dormant within and hold you back. Always remember, if you can’t see it, you can’t transform it.

One of the biggest blocks I see with folks in their pursuit to do & BE more in their life, work and relationships, is: Believing they don’t have authority. Authority over your thoughts. Authority over your self-image.

Addicted To Approval & Acceptance

“Endearment is a choice; people pleasing is based on need” ~Thomas Leonard

A few months back I was very excited to be able to carve out some time in the afternoon and sit down and watch the final episodes of the Oprah show.

And it was no surprise that the last episodes did not disappoint – especially, when Sarah Ferguson was on discussing her recent snub from not being invited to the royal wedding – as well as the boatload of mistakes she’s made in recent years.

The show’s real focus however, was demonstrating Sarah’s recovery through her leveraging the team of Oprah’s experts to help her recover and re-claim her life. Here is a
Short Video – where Dr. Phil points out how Sarah’s mistakes and her self-sabotage are steeped in a strong addiction to approval and acceptance.

Most of us don’t realize how a strong need for acceptance and approval is driving our lives – and where this strong, unmet need was initially born from.

Your Sense of Self Worth

“Self-worth comes from one thing – thinking that you are worthy.”
~ Wayne Dyer

There is something that I would augment to Wayne Dyer’s statement above and that is –“Self-Worth comes from two things: knowing and believing that you’re worthy” – because we can try to convince ourselves all day long that we’re worthy, but if you don’t feel it in your gut and your heart, it’s really difficult to convince yourself of it.

So, what’s the secret, the magic pill to experiencing what Claim Your Worth!® really means and what it really feels like?

Well, the first step to the process is exactly what’s mentioned above which is raising your awareness of your worth so you can know and believe that you’re worthy. But the question remains for most, how much are you really worthy of? How much self-worth are you supposed to have?
